Asked for an elderly parent to confirm their SS # and they unwisely gave it out (parent has dementia). I called back and it claims to be the SS # office, but if so, why did they ask for the number and not confirm the number on file?

Very strange. I don't answer numbers I don't recognize so a message was left to call 855-369-5447 (Allen, TX) to answer questions on recent application for SS benefits. Looked up 855 numbers and found they are often scammers so I blocked it. And this is what's strange...after blocking the 855 number, it disappeared and 469-656-6039 showed up as blocked number. Not sure what's up but it's extremely fishy.

Name of Irene, called to verify information on my recent online SSDI application. She asked for about 30 minutes of my time but took only a few minutes. I usually am cautious about things like this but since I am tryig to get SSDI I fell for the questions which included my address, age and SSN. I asked for his last name he said'CLAXTON'...Asked for my name ;date of birth; country and city of birth; and then wanted my MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME...(that is when I actually asked for his last name ) ..I told him I don't trust giving all this info they already have..by phone!!! He said this is to verify who you are.(NONSENSE).I said I don't trust this.He responded 'Well call us back when you're ready to give all info..' Wow.

If you requested a callback and you received a callback within 1 hour, its safe to say that it's a legitimate call. Now if you got a call a week later, then yes I would be suspicious. SO if your going to worry you might get a scam call, DON'T ask for a callback!

A recording stating that this is Social Security Administration, please call us at this (800)#. I am blind and do receive calls from ss so that they could read the letter or item that is being mailed to me. This is so sad to not be able to tell of it really is the US Gov. Please do not fall for this scam. Do not give any of your personal information out at all.

Since wait time for a Social Security rep to come on the line was 45 minutes, I left a message for a callback to my phone. When the call came, my caller ID read: Fraudulent Call, along with the 469 ph #. I did not answer it.

If you made an inquiry at the official SSA and told you would get a call back, then why would anyone be looking up the number if you got an expected call back within a reasonable time frame of making the request? The chance of a scammer finding out you are expecting a call back is highly unlikely.HOWEVER.....Scammers spoof legitimate numbers and this is not a published official number you can verify, so it could be a scammer randomly calling.If you suspect its not them and had to look up the number, then perhaps its not. It actually IS a Social Security legitimate number. They are just making sure it was YOU who was filling out the online information.

Caller played recording of my voice, then came on line...Identified herself as SS employee and began working with me regarding my claim..Initially seemed legit, however, later started asking credit questions...such as Mother's maiden name..full SS#..Fathers name..Address..City and Country of birth..date of birth..citizenship..just sounded kind of suspicious to me..sounded like they were asking for credit info to me..

I was expecting a call back from Social Security, but this number came through my caller ID without a name, so I didn't answer. I called the number and the recording does say it's the Social Security Administration, but to call the toll-free number. I suppose I'll just have to wait the 40 minutes to be sure I don't get scammed.

Requested call back from SS.Gov. Person answering spoke quite fast and asked for my SSN (not my name). I asked where she was located and she replied Penn. I asked why Texas appeared on my phone! She did not know. I said you can understand my concern about why I will not give you my number. I need to confirm who you are. She began talking fast again seeming frustrated with me so I hung up. This call was very suspicious to me. I did not know why Social Security would be calling me back from a different state than what I live in. Usually my returned calls come directly from the S.S. in my home town.

how do you know or can be safe accepting a call from this number when ss office states on their voicemail do not accept any calls from other number due to fraud.they ask all kinds of info bu they will not give you any infothis is crazy not safe

Because scammers don't understand boundries of City, County, Township or apparently State. The only way to get a legitimate call back from the SSA is to request it and you have to say your name which they record and playback when they call.Quote:Return call from the security administration requested by. Received a call this morning from this number, and I said from the outset it did not seem legit. The female caller did not try to dissuade me from my claim NOR did she give her name or an employee I.D. number. I refused to provide any information and quickly ended the call.

I live in Maryland, and I spoke to my local Social Security Office last week. They let me know that someone from the DC office would be contacting me. They also informed me that I may get a spam call with an unknown number, claiming to be Social Security. The following day while waiting for them to call, my phone rings with this number showing. I answered it, only because I was expecting other phone calls from other places. There was no one at the other end and I hung up. The same number called me back within a couple of hours, and I didn't answer my phone. Social Security called me back later in the day from a completely different number. I cannot prove it's a spam call because no one was on the other end when I answered, but from reading everyone's comments, I am pretty certain it was.

We called Social Security at (800) 772-1213. They called back on this number within about 1 hour, which is what the original wait time was supposed to be.

I received a call from this number too. I was very hesitant to give out my personal info. SSI should not allow employees to use their personal phone for call backs. SSI always calls from the 800 number and my caller ID identify's that the number is legitimate. When this guy called me from the 469 area code my caller ID said SCAM do not answer. I hope it's a legitimate employee.
