This came in letter form to request a call, about my account. On hold until closing time. Called back— office closed.

the number is legit. I got a letter (US mail) from the IRS thanking me for using IRS Online Services. The letter had my address and someone else's name. I called the IRS and was told the account would be canceled.

I received two notices in the mail stating someone tried to access my account and to call 888 841 4648. I called IRS on different number and they said all notices would have an IRS contact name and return address would never be PO Box. He didn't have this number in his file as legitimate either. Who knows but I'm not taking any chances.

I received several emails over a period of 2 hrs.with different confirmation codes from the IRS trying to establish an online profile. The last email from the IRS said an online profile had been created per my request, but if I didn't request it, to call 1-888-841-4648. I went onto the irs.gov website and looked up 'online services profile'. It brought up 'Understanding your CP301 Notice' which included the phone number as an IRS number to call if you didn't create an online profile. I called the number and spoke to the IRS giving my social security number and other info. They were unable to find that any online profile had actually been established. They said sometimes if a hacker gets an email address they send out emails claiming to be from the IRS that aren't real thinking it is funny to make me and the IRS waste time making sure no profile was actually set up.

Received 5 or 6 Emails in a day telling me to call this number 888-841-4648 with confirmation code...My friend got suspicious and Googled the phone number and came across these other people saying the same thing 'SCAM-FRAUD' . Thanks guy's. I hope no other widow or widower gets caught by this. The News media needs to put this out to the public especially in Florida.

The IRS does send out letters like that when you set up an online account. If you did not set up an account then that is a letter that tells you that someone did using your information. You can easily check it by contacting the IRS at a known, published phone number.

I got the same call back t after google'ing the phone number, it was published on the IRS Website on their form regarding e-Verify

This number claimed to be Internal Revenue Service On Line. I received an email stating a 'user registration has been performed on IRS online per your request. If you did not perform this registration, please contact 1-888-841-4648.'After calling, a woman addressed my concerns but never asked any questions to verify my identity. It wasn't until after she transferred me to the next level of assistance that I was asked for my SS #. At that point I became suspicious and hung up.

Are you kidding me? Get this number taken out of service. This pin number bs is really hampering my ability to file electronically and it's the IRS that is responsible for protecting us against fraud.

I just confirmed with an IRS rep that 888-841-4648 is a legitimate IRS phone number. That is the number that you call for online services for your personal income tax acct. example: locked out etc.They are open 7am-7pm.That definitely puts my mind at ease.

I received a letter from IRS talking about online services with that number on it. What had me concerned was it was in the name from my previous marriage and it was sent to my mother's address. I didn't call or react in any way, I let the activation code expire. The return address on the letter was Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 9019, Holtsville, NY 11742-9019

I received a letter today in the mail that had the IRS logo on it and was confused. It was a letter pertaining to 'my online services ' giving me an activation code and a phone number to call along with a website. The problem I have is I DONT have an account. I called the phone number and after a 40 minute wait a woman picked up the phone and I explained that I did not have an account and was worried I might be a victim of some scam. She then asked for my ssn and by now I felt kind of paranoid because the IRS never asks for your ssn over the phone. I told her I didnt feel comfortable giving that away over the phone and she proceeded to tell me that for her to find my nonexistant account she needed my ssn. I ended the call after that.

A simple Google search of this number would also have confirmed the number is a legitimate IRS number, but it does not confirm or verify any caller is legitimate since scammers spoof IRS numbers all the time.
