They had sent what looked like a Microsoft One-Time-Password text message to the cell phone first. Then they called three times with an automated message that if I had received a false Microsoft authenticator code, to press '0' to reach my IT department about the issue. I hung up all 3 times.

This is incorrect, the number is Microsoft MFA (multifactor authentication), when configured in Azure, (maybe more). If you are getting it multiple times, somebody is trying to logon to a system that is configured with your number, and it wants you to answer and hit pound to verify it's you. If you aren't logging in then the number is entered incorrectly, but the multiple calls means the system is working as designed. If you were to answer the call you would hear 'this is the Microsoft sign in verification process. Please press pound to complete your verification. '

Eighteen posts on this thread and slightly over half are busy tell everyone who'll listen, how 'legit' this number is. It's most likely some sort of scam. Looks like the shill posters are hiding behind a lot of technical mumbo-jumbo.Personally I'd ignore and block any communication from this number.Other sites also report this number to be a scam of some sort.

It's legit call from Microsoft. They verify the identity by calling you if you have chosen the call answer for the verification process. You may choose text message if you don't want to receive the call.

This number has called my UK mobile number once a day, for the last 11 days. I didn't norice immediately, because calls were made around midnight GMT and phone on do not disturb. No voicemail left. This number keeps calling my work phone. They’ve called me 20 times just this past week. I never answer that phone unless I recognize the number, and they finally left a message today. So when you are attempting to access a remote system, it could be an Azure system, or a standard Windows Remote Desktop System, the MS validation service is going to call you and ask you to press a button to validate your access. Basically this is way to prove you are a human being trying to access whatever remote system you are accessing. Now if you don't know if you are accessing a remote system or not....well that's an entirely different problem altogether and one that I probably can't help you with. ;-)

Whoever you talked to does not have the correct information. This call is regarding validation to a system, for me it was validation to my client's remote desktop system. How did I get here? Well the first time they called I didn't realize that, the 2nd time I called it happened to coincide with me trying to get logged into a remote desktop, plus my login instructions said I would get a call on my cell phone. So umm yeahh...this is totally legitimate.

Called me three times back-to-back this morning. I pushed the first two straight to voicemail because I didn't recognize the number and then let it ring until my phone automatically sent it to voicemail the third time. The stopped a calling at that point. Check my messages and whatever it is that's so important for them to call me three times in a row is apparently not important enough to leave a message about.
